The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) is a global legal aid and advocacy organization working to create a world where refugees and all people seeking safety are empowered to claim their right to freedom of movement and a path to lasting refuge.
Part student group and pro bono project, IRAP chapters contribute to various local and international efforts to provide pathways to safety for displaced people. Since the organization’s founding in 2008, IRAP’s pro bono network of law students and attorneys have helped over 4,200 refugees and their families resettle to 18 different countries. IRAP SU is one of IRAP’s 26 law school chapters across the United States and Canada. To learn more about IRAP, visit www.refugeerights.org.
IRAP student chapters work on legal and advocacy projects identified and supervised by IRAP staff, but also engage with refugee issues and organizations in their local communities. Each chapter has student leaders who run the chapter as a student group on campus.

Students at Seattle University School of Law (SU Law) join IRAP because they seek practical ways to express their care and passion for supporting immigrant and refugee communities. Students participate in IRAP to gain information about immigration law, network with practitioners whose work aligns with their interests, and engage in pro bono work. With Washington being the third-largest refugee-receiving state, many SU Law students have personal connections to the issue of immigrant justice. IRAP attracts students from diverse backgrounds, a diversity not reflected in many other student organizations.

At SU Law, students also have access to opportunities such as the immigration clinic and professors with expertise and experience across various areas of immigration law, many of whom encourage the student body to become aware of IRAP’s work and advocacy. While many students join IRAP already passionate about immigrant justice, the organization also welcomes those who are eager to learn more. Some IRAP student members have taken 100-hour pro bono pledges through the law school and fulfill those hours by working on projects offered by IRAP.
