Hello, and welcome to A.n.I.Ma.L. club!
We are a group of students at Seattle University who are interested in learning about, building, and exploring more ethical deep machine learning (deepML) and AI systems. We seek to:

1. Improve General DeepML Literacy
As more and more deepML tools are branded as “AI,” we believe an understanding of these technologies and their limitations is an increasingly crucial part of navigating our current techno-social environment in an informed way.

2. Collaboratively Build DeepML
We recognize that undergraduate education has fallen behind industry in teaching the ideas and skills needed to build modern deepML and AI. Animal seeks to fill this gap, fostering collaborative deepML projects and connecting our members to work going on in the field.

3. Expand Access to the Latest DeepML Models
DeepML research is moving at a fast pace, but there is often a sizable gap between when work is published and most people get access. We’re working to build our own infrastructure to provide the broader SU community with free and reduced cost access to these kinds of models.

A Note on Our Approach
Without industry-like demands to produce production-ready models (deepML ready to make profit) or academia-like demands to churn out incremental research improvements, we find ourselves with a unique space from which to approach the field. In places of these traditional demands, we strive to make deepML more fun, make deepML more accessible, and – with a healthy dose of critical thought – make deepML technologies that build and care for community as their primary and fundamental goal.

To be a Buddhist is to be both an ecologist and a conservationist. This is the vision EcoSangha strives to promote. It is a vision modeled on the Buddha as the Great Physician who is called to the service of those in pain and suffering, who scientifically investigates the nature of and prognosis for an ailment and then compassionately effects a cure. The progression from symptom to cure is presented by the Buddha in his fundamental teaching of the Four Noble Truths: symptom, diagnosis, prognosis and cure.

The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) is a global legal aid and advocacy organization working to create a world where refugees and all people seeking safety are empowered to claim their right to freedom of movement and a path to lasting refuge.
Part student group and pro bono project, IRAP chapters contribute to various local and international efforts to provide pathways to safety for displaced people. Since the organization’s founding in 2008, IRAP’s pro bono network of law students and attorneys have helped over 4,200 refugees and their families resettle to 18 different countries. IRAP SU is one of IRAP’s 26 law school chapters across the United States and Canada. To learn more about IRAP, visit www.refugeerights.org.
IRAP student chapters work on legal and advocacy projects identified and supervised by IRAP staff, but also engage with refugee issues and organizations in their local communities. Each chapter has student leaders who run the chapter as a student group on campus.

Students at Seattle University School of Law (SU Law) join IRAP because they seek practical ways to express their care and passion for supporting immigrant and refugee communities. Students participate in IRAP to gain information about immigration law, network with practitioners whose work aligns with their interests, and engage in pro bono work. With Washington being the third-largest refugee-receiving state, many SU Law students have personal connections to the issue of immigrant justice. IRAP attracts students from diverse backgrounds, a diversity not reflected in many other student organizations.

At SU Law, students also have access to opportunities such as the immigration clinic and professors with expertise and experience across various areas of immigration law, many of whom encourage the student body to become aware of IRAP’s work and advocacy. While many students join IRAP already passionate about immigrant justice, the organization also welcomes those who are eager to learn more. Some IRAP student members have taken 100-hour pro bono pledges through the law school and fulfill those hours by working on projects offered by IRAP.

We utilize the nationally recognized Mental Health First Aid curriculum to empower students, faculty, and staff with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognize early, worsening, and crisis signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges, engage in supportive conversations, and connect individuals to appropriate care and resources.
