“Advocacy,” which captures mock trial, moot court, and alternative dispute resolution, is a category of professional skills and activities that involve written and oral communication, problem solving, and legal analysis. Advocacy programs in law schools provide students with invaluable opportunities: opportunities for professional development, opportunities to build communities, and opportunities to find joy in the practice of law.

The primary purpose of the Business and Entrepreneurship Law Association (BELA) is to provide access and build relationships between law students and the business/entrepreneurial community in Seattle. Secondarily, the Association seeks to explore topics such as corporate structures, funding opportunities, mergers/acquisitions, liability, marketing/advertising, online contracting, and other areas that relate to business/entrepreneurship law. BELA will accomplish these goals by providing various educational and practical events including career panels, presentations by guest speakers, job shadow opportunities, mentorship program, meet and greets, workshops, and various other functions.

The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) is a global legal aid and advocacy organization working to create a world where refugees and all people seeking safety are empowered to claim their right to freedom of movement and a path to lasting refuge.
Part student group and pro bono project, IRAP chapters contribute to various local and international efforts to provide pathways to safety for displaced people. Since the organization’s founding in 2008, IRAP’s pro bono network of law students and attorneys have helped over 4,200 refugees and their families resettle to 18 different countries. IRAP SU is one of IRAP’s 26 law school chapters across the United States and Canada. To learn more about IRAP, visit www.refugeerights.org.
IRAP student chapters work on legal and advocacy projects identified and supervised by IRAP staff, but also engage with refugee issues and organizations in their local communities. Each chapter has student leaders who run the chapter as a student group on campus.

Students at Seattle University School of Law (SU Law) join IRAP because they seek practical ways to express their care and passion for supporting immigrant and refugee communities. Students participate in IRAP to gain information about immigration law, network with practitioners whose work aligns with their interests, and engage in pro bono work. With Washington being the third-largest refugee-receiving state, many SU Law students have personal connections to the issue of immigrant justice. IRAP attracts students from diverse backgrounds, a diversity not reflected in many other student organizations.

At SU Law, students also have access to opportunities such as the immigration clinic and professors with expertise and experience across various areas of immigration law, many of whom encourage the student body to become aware of IRAP’s work and advocacy. While many students join IRAP already passionate about immigrant justice, the organization also welcomes those who are eager to learn more. Some IRAP student members have taken 100-hour pro bono pledges through the law school and fulfill those hours by working on projects offered by IRAP.

JSLA will support our mission in giving Jewish and non-Jewish law students a place to network within the Jewish Law community and educate students to increase understanding and acceptance. It shall provide a forum for speakers, advocacy training, and discussions on such topics as Jewish civil rights advocacy, campus antisemitism, international human rights law, and Jewish Safety and Wellbeing, as well as intersectional events with other diversity focused student organizations.

NALSA aims to provide an organization for Native American law students and other law students interested in the field of Indian law that will promote academic excellence, cultural fluency, and serve as a basis from which actions can be taken to advance the field of Indian law and affect positive change in the Native American community. NALSA also seeks to foster communication through collaborations with other SU Law organizations, service to the Native American community, working with attorneys practicing in the field of Indian law, and the general public. NALSA aspires to provide a forum for discussion of legal issues effecting Native Americans or relating to the field of Indian Law. NALSA also seeks to help advance the Indian law program and curriculum at Seattle University School of Law. With regard to future SU enrollment, NALSA hopes to assist Native Americans and individuals interested in studying the field of Indian law with the preparation and application to law school, and NALSA will also assist in the recruitment of Native American students and individuals interested in the field of Indian law to Seattle University School of Law.
